THE WAY YOU REGISTER TO VOTE IS CHANGING: LABOUR IS CAMPAIGNING FOR THE RIGHT TO VOTE

HOW IS IT CHANGING?

A Voter must get his/her name on to the voter register direct, instead of relying on the householder to put everyone’s name on the list.

HOW CAN I CHECK?

A household that registered everyone by the 7th June should be safe. Any doubts if you are on? The only way to check is to contact the local Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) at Sefton Council, or Southport Labour Party should now be able to tell you. The ERO is not under Council control, and has the power to compel voters to register.

NATIONAL MISSING MILLION MAN CAMPAIGN
We need to act or about ONE MILLION PEOPLE will LOSE THEIR VOTE nationally.
Who can register to vote?
Everyone who 16 years old or over (but they cannot vote until they are 18) and usually live in the UK. In addition a person must be a British, Irish or European Union citizen, or a Commonwealth citizen who has leave to remain in the UK or who does not require such leave. WHAT ARE THE PROBLEMS?

The problems are (a) the Constituency boundaries are changing
(b) registering as an individual can sometimes be complicated.

THE MISSING MILLION CAMPAIGN :STARTS NATIONALLY 24TH OCTOBER

FRANCHISE FOR THE MANY, NOT THE FEW

This is long term, with lots of Party HQ support available.

HOW DO WE GET STARTED?

First: raise public awareness of the need to make sure you areegistered. We can all help here by tweets, contacting local papers, and local colleges and student unions – many of these are already spreading the word. Remember anyone 16 years old or over can register (but they cannot vote until they are 18) if they usually live in the UK, although you must also be a British, Irish or European Union citizen, or a Commonwealth citizen with leave to remain in the UK (or not require that). HOW CAN WE BE MOST EFFECTIVE?

We need to target households and ‘lost’ voters. Southport Labour Party should be able to supply a list of properties where voters are not yet registered. We need to locate properties with a high turnover of residents, and ask our Councillors to display voter registration information at their surgeries. Fortunately our progressive Constituency is bringing Contact Creator on line and will be able to supply detailed targeting information in due course.

MEMBER VOLUNTEERS ARE OUR SCARCEST AND MOST VALUABLE RESOURCE AND WE NEED TO TARGET OUR TIME EFFECTIVELY HOW TO GET STARTED? ORGANISE, ORGANISE, ORGANISE!

(a) A briefing meeting on the snags and procedures. e.g. NEVER COLLECT REGISTRATION FORMS IN, THEY MUST BE SENT INDIVIDUALLY BY VOTERS (SAE?).
(b) Use the session to plan target areas and times. Could use an extra Friday evening at the Labour Club?
