Liz Savage urges local councillors to improve the town by spending money allocated to Southport by Sefton

Liz Savage, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate has taken local councillors to task over their lack of spending in Southport.  Each Sefton Ward is allocated a certain amount of money based on its population.  Local Councillors for each ward have to come to an agreement between them as to how the money is allocated in their wards.
Here's the link to the latest ward budgets published by Sefton Council:

http://modgov.sefton.gov.uk/moderngov/documents/s56746/FD%203282%20-%20Southport%20Budget%20Monitoring-f-l.pdf

Liz stated “I’m shocked at how little has been spent within Southport  from the ward budgets particularly as in most wards all the councillors represent the same party and therefore it’s not political differences which is stopping the money from being spent”  At the moment there is £112k allocated to Southport which has not been spent.

“Councillors in Southport are quick to point the finger at Sefton Council and say that they don’t pay regard to Southport,  but when money has been allocated it hasn’t been spent.  Only £305 has been allocated of the Kew Ward budget and £53 in Norwood.  Meanwhile residents in Kew around the Folkestone Road area are having major issues in relation to parking and Dukes Ward residents are having issues with dog poo.  This money could be spent on schemes to alleviate these problems.  Some of the money could be spent on installing or updating  play equipment.  Other projects could include helping the Botanic Gardens, painting of railings in parks, bandstands generally things that make Southport a more pleasant place to live.”

Recenty the Champion had responses to this press release in their paper. I responded with the letter below which wasn’t published but shows that the local Liberal Democrats do not understand the issue involved. Most of the wards have money outstanding from previous years.

Dear Editor,
I noted with interest the comments of Cllr Welsh in relation to spending in Norwood ward for 2014-2015. I think she has missed the point of the recent article regarding Southport Councillors lack of spending in Southport. Residents may wish to know that each ward was given an allocation of £4083 for the year 2014-2015. With seven wards this was £28,581 for Southport. However over a number of years Southport Councillors have failed to spend on Southport and so an accumulated budget of £91,841.91 was brought forward from previous years. Whilst Cllr Welsh says Norwood Councillors only have £6128 left to last them till the end of the year this is still 150% of the budget allocated for this year. This poses two questions: Has this money not been spent so the local councillors can claim Bootle Labour do nothing for Southport when in fact it is them not spending their budget or are they planning a spending spree before the election so that the people of Southport are led to believe that local councillors have their interests at heart?
Yours faithfully,

Liz Savage
