New food bank collection point at Southport Labour office
Parliamentary candidate Liz Savage announced that Southport Labour's new office on Eastbourne Road will be the town's latest foodbank collection point. Liz said "I visited the Lakeside foodbank this week to see the fantastic work that they do there. Who would believe that in the 21st century in a seemingly affluent town like Southport that food banks would be relied on by thousands of households? During my visit I was told that more than 20,000 meals were distributed last year from this food bank alone, and remember Southport has three of these. I was also informed by the brilliant volunteers there that more and more working families are finding it necessary to turn to food banks as low wages, benefit cuts and high energy bills take their toll on household budgets. There's also an increase in elderly people finding it hard to make ends meet who are having to use the food bank. The foodbank are aware that there are many elderly people in the town who need the foodbank but aren't aware of how to access it. I'd urge anyone who knows a family member or neighbour who is in dire need of the foodbank to encourage them to apply for a voucher from the CAB.
We want to help make it easier for people who want to contribute to our local food banks by making our new office a collection point. Southport food banks would particularly benefit from donations of long life fruit juice, tinned meat and tinned tuna. They are also particularly short of all sizes of nappies. People who are struggling to feed themselves also struggle to buy basic toiletries such as toothpaste and sanitary products. I hope as many people as possible can help".
